Storm Smart, the largest storm-protection and lifestyle-enhancement company in the state, has chosen the winners for the July and August philanthropic We Care program.

For the months of July and August, Storm Smart partnered with Valerie’s House, a nonprofit established to help children and families work through the loss of a loved one through counseling and support systems. Due to the impact of COVID-19, Valerie’s House moved all services virtually.

However, this change stunted the healing process of those within the programs and therefore, Founder and CEO Angela Melvin started working to find a safe solution to provide in-person services once again.

To assist with reopening facilities according to updated CDC requirements, Executive Chairman of Storm Smart, Brian Rist, donated $18,000 so that the families in need could come back together safely. “The Storm Smart, ‘We Care’ program is truly what is seems – a program that shows we care about our community,” said Brian Rist. “We are glad to be able to support our community by making sure the one of a kind services offered at Valerie’s House are available even with changing health and safety standards.”

In addition to the financial donation to Valerie’s House in the month of July, Storm Smart wanted to use the month of August to honor a teacher through the We Care program by providing a state-of-the-art whole-home hurricane protection system to a local teacher. This is Storm Smart’s way of saying “thank you” for the resilience and flexibility of our teachers as they prepare for school to start back up.

The August We Care winner is Shon Wells, a local teacher who is also participating in programming at Valerie’s house with his two sons after losing his wife to cancer three years ago. The Storm Smart team will be going out to the Well’s home on August 20th to measure for their new whole-home storm protection system. When the August giveaway winner was announced, Shon shared that this was a huge weight lifted off of his shoulders, literally and figuratively, as he was manually putting up shutters every time a storm was coming to protect his children.

“When you are a single parent, especially a Dad, there are many responsibilities that can be overwhelming, especially in grief. Knowing their home is protected this way and will always be, no matter how dangerous the storm, is a true relief for the family,” stated Angela Melvin, Founder of Valerie’s House. “We are forever grateful to Storm Smart for bringing a sense of peace to a Valerie’s House family.”

Storm Smarts’ We Care Program was put in place to give back to the community that has given so much.
